Female fronted Nottingham based rock/pop punk quartet As December Falls latest EP is, in a word, brilliant! While not a fan of this particular strain of rock music, there is an undeniable teenage charm and signature 'snap' to this whole record. This is the result of the band's collaboration with producer Arthur Walwin, whose more famous projects have been with Busted and Fightstar. As you may predict, production values are very high, precise and more than worthy of a UK/US mainstream chart release.
If you're new to these guys, but familiar with bands such as Paramore or Avril Lavigne then picking this up and getting into it won't give you a lot of trouble at all. I must say that I prefer Bethany Curtis as a vocalist when compared to Hayley Williams. This is a plus straight away as I do admit that I have a bit of a soft spot for Paramore when in the mood, and I'm sure that Bethany will be compared to Hayley many more times in the future. All five tracks on this EP have that same warm and comforting feel along with that signature snap I mentioned earlier, combining that fresh youthful exuberance with well written material and incredibly tight musicianship. I especially like track 3 - 'Capture' which is a re-release of a previous version first heard on YouTube a while back and was very well received.
I think, well at very least I hope that the self-funded, self-managed 'As December Falls' will go from strength to strength. The release of this EP - if there is any justice - will bring these guys the positive attention they truly deserve, and hopefully a full album. Give them a record deal, they deserve it!!
